encasing psyche
Hi All-
I'm trying to figure out psyche, but having no luck so far. I can make it turn a pretty MOP blue, but that's about it. But my biggest problem is when I encase it, there are lines left where the wraps of clear are- they look almost like cracks, but aren't. Any tips on encasing/ using Psyche?
Thanks!

I wouldn 't know about the marks, but reducing and flashing it before encasing gives me more colors, but a lot in the blues and greens

Ensure that you don't burn off the reduction while encasing. The base colour and the brand of clear you use will help determine the final colour. Using Aether to encase will result in more greens and blues while Reichenbach 104 will help create the purples. I always got wonderful purples with Lauscha encasing but stopped using it due cracking problems. I also love the lines but you can avoid them by applying and melting the encasing very gently.

DITTO!
however there are ways to manipulate this effect.. try encasing with dots instead of lines, really neat pebble effect kinda, or melting in SOME dots and then spiral encasing.
Your other option is trying to encase a different way, try the blob gather thing (creating a big gather and blobbing it around your bead). there are other ways of encasing too, just search out a thread on encasing, you will find a bunch of different methods.

Hi Glenda,
Yep, those lines are just what happens when you are encasing silver glass. You can either do the big blob method as suggested and work the clear glass to the ends, or what I really like the look of is the "tornado technique". It was originated by Margaret Zinser and Anouk does a lot of her beads this way too. You start at one end and coil the clear glass on leaving a little space in between the coils and then melt that down. Then encase the whole thing again. This lets the unencased glass melt up and leave a spiral effect in the bead. This technique by passes the whole problem of the lines from encasing silver glass. I hope that is clear. I'm not sure if Margaret still has the tutorial posted on her site. You might want to check that out. It is a very detailed explanation.

Reduce and Glop clear on, keeping the reduced PSyche away from any neutral/oxy flame.

Try encasing with a paddle of clear instead of the rod. Melt a big ol gather. Smoosh it into a long paddle shape. Warm it enough to bend but not melt entirely out of shape and encase with it. Makes a nice thin encasement.

I just did some beads-What I did was make a wrap around the bead, then took my clear and put on top of the wrap . I then build the sides of the clear. I used this for smaller round beads. Will try to post pic later. Hope this helps

Thanks everyone, for the help- and thanks to Margaret for the tutorial link. I have lots of new ideas to try- the encasing with a paddle of clear is especially interesting, gonna have to see if that works!

Margaret,
Thanks for sharing that tutorial. I had learned a similar technique in a class I took locally but it's nice to have such a great tut to refer to.
