Hey Ron. Can you post the PM? Also, if there have been any updates in the past several months, I have not received them either.

Happy New Year!

Hi Dweezil.
No real updates in the past few months. The last one was the tube implosions with fumed gold and silver. At this point, we have taken implosions to the point where anyone who reads this tutorial will have enough knowledge to know how any implosion was done, just by seeing it. Here are the two pms... hope this info helps.
Ron

First PM...
I have one. How do I get better separation between layers of petals while still getting them to implode outward? Should I try lines of clear between my color lines? Or is it all in the spacing?
Hi!
There are a few things to do to get better separation. The first thing is the stringer cane should be kept thin (about 3mm at most). This will allow more space when you draw the petal pattern with them.
Second, thing is to keep nice spacing as you apply the stringer. I always apply the dots, then two rows of petals. Then I implode the glass a bit, to create more space to add a third row. Then again, I implode that some more before I go back and add a row of green for leaves. Imploding in layers, does a few things. First thing is, glass gets thinner and more transparent, the farther it is imploded. Imploding in layers, adds more opaque layers outside and behind the first layers, making your finished flower more opaque. The second thing is it adds more space which prevents you from trying to fit 4 rows when there is only space for two.
----------------------------------------------
The person answered saying they use 16mm rod.
-----------------------------------------------
16mm is on the small side. Even if you melt the end to get a nice size gather for the maria, the main rod is thin and will stretch during the implosion.... unless you use a finer flame and really focus on heat direction.
Squishing the flower.....
The best way to describe this is.... when you push down on the graphite marver to flatten the maria during the implosion.... don't push too hard. The goal is to ONLY move the surface of the glass. You press just enough to flatten the bottom without moving the maria itself.
To practice..........
Make one implosion, but with one circle drawn on it with stringer (about the size of a dime). No dots, no petals, etc...
Now do the entire implosion without pressing the glass on a marver at all!! implode the circle all the way down to a closed point. Do this one time and you will have a feel for how the glass moves, but more important, it forces you to use all kinds of postions (straight up and down, level, angled toward the flame and level, etc) to get the glass to move how you want.
Try moving up to 18-20mm rod.
Keep the questions coming.
Ron
PS- Keep in mind that once you have a tutorial from me, it opens up our communication. Feel free to ask ANY glass question... it isn't limited to just the tutorial you have.

GlassAlias... We are in Florida. You could always bring the family to Disney and the beaches and stop by for a class.
It is 75-85 outside right now.....

Just ordered mine - looking forward to some new insights on implosions and to the tube implosion technique which has always fascinated me.

Yes, you can use it for soft glass - you just need to substitute the colours in the recipes.
