Default Birth of a Studio!

Finally, after a year of planning and saving, my studio is being built in the garage! As required by the city, I had to drywall the entire garage before they issued a permit. I love the city I live in!

View from the back right corner. Where you see the insulation is where the studio is going. Drywall isn't spackled yet. This was last Wednesday, September 26th and they only started on Monday.

While we were at it, the 30 year old garage door was replaced. One of the wooden panels, 21" in. x 16' ft, will be recycled into my workbench.

Congratulations. I can't wait to see how it progresses in the future. Please keep sharing pics of th progress. I'd love to have my own little room to do the glass stuff in. Maybe in a year or so when one of the boy's leave the nest. I'm not sure if I'm ready for that so for now...I'll stay content in my little corner

September 28th, Friday
I have walls! Everything is spackled and ready for me to paint. The rectangular hole about 5 ft. fromthe ground is where the AC/Heating unit is going. Next up will be electrical...

I hate when things first get built. I'm sure it's going to be a nice size studio but looking from it with just the boards up...it looks soo small.
It's like looking at new houses going up. The pads look like the size for the garage and then 6 months later you have this huge house on it!
Thanks for more pics...keep em coming. Maybe I can give my kids a hint!

It does look small doesn't it? Trust me it's a good size... with the tall ceilings it's huge! Plenty of shelf space for my stuff.

Looks like a great space!!! Wish I had so much.... You will enjoy it.
Where is the ventilation system going?..... I did not see a window...
I hate to stick my nose in but I am worried about you and many other lampworkers who don't build in good ventilation....

LOL... no worries Heather. Ventilation is my top concern. Straight from my blog... I forgot to update it here!

Ventilation was installed, but unfortunately at a much lower CFM than I expected. Originally we had talked about the fan being ceiling mounted right above my workbench, pulling air at about 600 CFM. Having it about 4 ft above my work space wasn't a great concern; the room was small and would be pulling a great deal of air. When it was installed though, I discovered the CFM was only 160. Do you hear the warning bells? Mayday, mayday... too low!

When I called my contractor, in a teensy weensy panic mode, he offered a very reasonable explaination. If you look at the picture below, the ventilation fan and heating/AC unit are very close to each other. If both are on, the 600 CFM fan would be pulling the heat/cold out of the room as soon as it was blowing in. Ah ha... good reason. But it still leaves me with a problem. We've discussed using 8-10" metal tubing to make a vent closer to workbench, maybe 2 ft above the work area, and a higher CFM fan. I haven't tested the current setup though... so I'll wait.

STILL waiting for the !@#$% electrical inspector. He's the last one I need to get the room signed off.

Good luck with the installation Melissa. When they were redoing my kitchen, you would need to watch them carefully, because the contractor's idea of where things should be or how the lights should be wired were not in line with mine. I had a few redos of minor details. Stand up for your needs. What happens when the AC/heat is not on? that is about a week a year. Joan barzilai

Oh no worries... I won't give the final payment until I'm totally happy with the entire set up, ESPECIALLY the ventilation. Besides, I know where he lives... just down my street!

It's lookin' good!!

I'm envious of all these people who have such cute work spaces! I have a corner of the basement and it's pretty ugly. Functional, but it's got the whole stained-concrete wall thing goin' on.

Nice!

Melissa, it's looking great! I'd love to have a dedicated room for torching.

Is the white fan on the ceiling your ventilation fan or the AC/heating?

My fresh air is the open door. The garage will be cracked open too anytime I torch.

The ventilation is in the ceiling with the AC/heating unit in the wall. The vent system is not completed. He's still going to add a metal tubing with a small hood closer to the workbench.

Thanks guys! I'm so excited!!!!
