Mandrel drying rack - free, make in 2 minutes!
Not quite enough for a tutorial, as it's just two pictures that speak for themselves.
I needed a way to dry a batch of mandrels, so I got a used cardboard box and cut it in half. Make sure the corrugations go up and down.
Works great for the 3/32" mandrels I like. 1/16" falls through, but still works. 1/8" works once, but damages the box in the process.

That's pretty cool. Almost looks like a jail cell. I use stryofoam sheet, maybe 1.5"-2" thick. I have a sheet/block of it for every size mandrel I use. The mandrels stand up straight and the styro lasts a long time. I'm always saving it out of packaging so it's free too.

I have a flower pot filled with vermiculite or sand would work too. I use this to hold my mandrels while they are drying etc.

The sound of pushing something in styrofoam bugs me. I don't understand it, as fingernails on chalkboard don't bother me.

I have a coffee can with sand that I use to hold them, but I find that I always get a few that want to touch if I put too many in.

Cool. I use baby wipe boxes (bottoms) and fill with cat litter, I have 2 sitting on a rolly cart right next to me.

Excellent idea for a quick makeshift mandrel holder.

If I need a mandrel drier, I'll definitely keep that in mind! Clever idea!
I'm a dip and flame dry kind of girl.

I think my cats would use that, too. Heck, I've got one that will use an empty box.

Gosh, I actually like this alot. For years & years, I've just used a coffee can filled with sand, cheap-easy-whatever. But with your way, I'd have the inside of the box to place all the miscellaneous jars of release!!!!! I may just give this a whirl!!! Thanks, Joe!

This is what I have. I used fish tank gravel but I want to switch to sand. I put them in front of a fan so they dry quicker.

That's what I do. 2x4 chopped into one foot lengths. I draw a grid and drill at each intersection with a bit (1/16, 3/32, 3/16, whatever).
Of course you have to be careful to drill straight. Ask me how I know.

Astrid.. I don't have to... that's why I always remember to use my drill press now when I make those...

I too took a 12 inch piece of 2 x 4 and drilled 2 rows of holes down the length of it about an inch apart. It holds 22 mandrels and I can set it at the back of the bench so that the radiant heat of the flame dries them.
Alb - gridlines? who needs grid lines? as long as the mandrels dont touch each other, you're good to go - hehehehe

I use a clay flower pot with a piece of tape over the drain hole filled with colored sand. The sand is like what used to be used for sand paintings...or layered for designs years ago in glass containers. You can find the sand at Hobby Lobby or Michael's it comes in really purdy colors .
