Default Make hole in vent

I picked up an old vent hood. After I gut it how do I put a hole in for the duct work? This is a 70's tract home one that never vented anywhere....
Thanks in advance.

Good move Theresa - putting this question here! Hope you get some good guidance! If you don't get an answer that works with what you have to work with (tools and such), try sending a PM to "Dale M" inviting him to this thread and request he post a public reply; that way, all who need similar advice can benefit from it!

We've got a lot of knowledgeable peeps here - I'm sure you'll get some great help!

All my best!

De

If it were me I would take it to a local sheet metal shop and have them cut the hole.
I don't have the tools to cut a hole like that, but the metal shop could do it pretty cheaply.

I just had a sheet metal place make my hood for 230 dollars and it's a big one!

No indent. I do have a drill and a jig saw. The jig has been used to cut wood so I'm guessing there must be metal blades that will cut thorough it. Thanks everyone

OK here is what you need to do...

Get a metal cutting blade for your jig saw, buy several.
Mark out your cutout square or round

Square drill a hole in each corner...
Round just drill 1 starting hole...
inside of the lines and cut out with the jig saw Make sure that you keep the saw pressed tight to the metal or it will bounce and break the blade.

And please be sure to wear safety goggles! My hubby once got a metal shaving embedded in his eye (back when we were first dating) - no fun getting that sucker outta there in the Emergency Room! He says he did it purposely so I'd have to get real close to his cutie pie face to look in there and see if I could find it! What a nut! All he had to do was ask for a smooch!

Safety first, childrens!

One slight variation to Dave's suggestion: cut your hole about 1" or so smaller in diameter to the hole size you need for your vent ducting. Before you cut it out, draw the desired diameter circle centered on the smaller one. Once you've cut out the smaller hole, take a tin snips and make a series of cuts just to the larger circle all the way around, spaced about 1/2 inch or so (same thing you'd do if you were sewing a sleeve into a shirt, then cutting around the armhole to the stitching line for easement). This will form a ring of tabs around your hole. Then bend the tabs up. When you're ready to install your vent ducting, just slide it over the tabs and seal with duct tape. The tabs give you a handy way to secure the vent ducting to the hood.
