Default Sliced Bead

Can anyone explain to me how you slice the sides of a bead. Do you use a glass grinder? I have seen beads that are rather large. Where you make a barrel bead in opaques, then encase heavily, then make a design with opaques again, then some how the sides are sliced off so you can see the inside layers.

I hope I explained where someone can understand.

Man, I totally need to get a better monitor (or better eyes).
I thought this post said "sliced bread".
Then I thought, "if she needs instructions for slicing bread, maybe
she shouldn't be playing with fire....

Ha! I thought it said 'sliced bread', too.

The bead is called a 'geode' - named after the stone with a crystal-filled cavity inside.

If you have access to a lapidary saw, that would make things much easier & faster. Guess a tile saw would work, too, but would probably eat more of your bead since the blade it thicker.

Good luck!

Isn't it funny how we fill in letters?! I thought it said "Sliced Beaf" and beef was misspelled.

That still doesn't beat my thinking CPaP was CRaP. It gave a whole new meaning to the entire post!

I thought it was for making a bead that looked like a slice of bread.

Default Back to the original question...,

In order to slice a bread oops I mean bead;
I took a from Andrea G-S where we learned to do it on a lap.
After making your bead, you choose where to grind, and start out with a very coarse grit, and keep changing out to a finer and finer disk (using appropriate burnishing compounds).

Default I haven't posted pix for awhile

I have some pictures.
The first couple are from andrea's class, the one with the flowers I did at home.
**Note, dummy me, I after building so carefully from the inside out, I then forgot to encase it with an opaque color. Soooooooooooo, I instead etched it and then hit it with the lap.

Default Poor Examples

I have to tell you all that I am not thrilled with these beads. The one with the flowers is better, but the first ones you see still need a lot more polishing.
I have so many projects going that lap working has been on the back burner until summer, when I can take it outside where the mess will be easier to handle.
However, that said..., it is really fun!

Default Thanks!

Thanks so much for answering me. That is the bead I was talking about Lori. Sorry I just got back my father in law passed.

It is a little comical that everyone saw Bread. I do have to admit when I first typed it and sumbitted it I did type bread. I quickly changed it, so who knows who read it but it was only like a minute before I change it.

Thanks,

Patti

Jeri Warhafitig has great info on doing what she calls a "Geode bead" which is what this thread calls a sliced bead in her new book, "Glass Bead Workshop". Jeri is an LE'r, a great bead artist and a wonderful teacher. The book also has a section on how to use a lap grinder. It has lots of other amazing techniques in it as well. I highly recommend the book. You can get it from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Glass-Bead-Wor...9951470&sr=8-1

or directly from Jeri if you want it autographed:

I get how to "slice" the bead but can someone explain to me how to polish the glass afterwards, please? I sometimes go overboard with the dreamel and would like to know how to polish the glass back to a shine!

You are so welcome, Neil. I am savoring the book. I read it a little at a time so I can process all the info!
