You can use the same solid rod technique for soft glass that you would use for boro. I haven't tried any soft glass tube implosions (because I have no soft glass tubing), but you could probably use that technique, too. Just be aware that it will be a little harder control than with boro.

For an off-mandrel implosion, like for a pendant, you basically heat the end of a thick rod and get a good gather, point it straight down onto a marvering surface and make a maria. Make sure your rod is centered. Make a pattern of dots on the maria with a colored stringer or heat the face of the maria and use it to pick up some frit. Heat the edge of the Maria and watch it start imploding. Just follow the steps for the boro tuts that are on here and you should be fine.

wow those are really cool.
Im wanting to learn how to make pendants out of them. I guess the real thing im wanting to learn is how to make the colors fall into the glass like that.

I just watched an implosion demo in person the other day, and the artist would keep pressing the bottom of the maria with his marver after melting the dots in for a minute or two. (actually he used stringer, not dots) After awhile you could see the clear from the top of the maria making its way down , and the stringers starting to implode. It took about 20 minutes for him to make a marble this way.

I'm guessing it's lots of practice, and trial and error.

Thank you Kimberly I love making them I've made a lot of junkers but I owe it all to John K. he is the best. Cvorwald the clear glass doesn't fall over the color you press the color in to the clear. It's something the take awhile to learn like where to put the heat . When to put it in one spot and not another. How far you can put the pedals out on the maria before they fold over to far. It is something you really need to see in person watching a video wont do it. DanG

Dan, those are absolutely stunning.

Even when I saw the demo in person, it was still hard to figure out how in the world this happened! Whoever came up with this technique ... I can't imagine playing with glass like that and discovering something so awesome.

Shading your stringers gets you the different colors.

I've managed tube implosions in soft glass by blowing a bubble on a blowpipe and imploding it.

You can get a lot more detail but the shockyness of soft glass makes it a lot of work (and you have to blow a bubble first).
