Default how do you....band around

For ages now ive wondered how you get a thick band/stripe round the belly of a bead
ive tried with a thick and a thin rod, but it always ends up with uneven edges :
how do you get it on neatly and evenly?

Good question Angie, I'll be watching for the answer. The closest I've come is with a commercial stringer.

I know Corina doest it in her passing the flame "designing with stringer sideways" and she does a normal wrap, but she doesnt show how she does it.
you know im sure its on "stringer control" DVD im going to have a look and will let you know.
In the meantime anyone with any tips on this would be great

Thick stringer and practice, practice, practice! Two tips for 'neatening up' after the wrap is done are:
1) if the spot where the 2 ends of the stringer meet is a bit thicker due to overlap, heat that spot and use the tip of the remaining stringer or a small tweezer to pull off some of the excess glass
2) before melting the wrap in, use gentle heat and a straight-edge tool / edge of marver to push the stringer left or right as needed to get a nice straight wrap

Once those 2 steps are done, you've got a better chance of a nice, straight band once melted in.

Funny I have been practicing this for weeks now. I took Corina's class and she would hold the bead under the flame and gently move it up and down towards the flame but not directly in it, as she wraped the stringer. I have been trying this and it works pretty good. Thicker stringer is easier, but I think it just takes lots of practice.

I think hers are just beautiful!

There is another way - not using a stringer.

Make THREE beads on one mandrel. Two of the same color on
either end, and the "band" color in the middle. The beads should
be VERY close, but not touching.

Heat the areas in BETWEEN the beads. The glass will flow
towards the heat. When you are done heating, you should have
ONE bead, with the same color on either end and a nice band of
color in the middle.

Clear as mud?

It also works great for colored "bands" on the ends!

Another way is to make a fairly large gather on the end of a rod, and *just* touch it to the bead, then pull it away and slowly wind it onto the bead. When I do this I turn the bead really slowly, but it's very easy to get a wide band with nice even edges.

The amount of glass that you lay down will depend on several factors: the size of the gather, the heat of the gather, and the speed of the winding. It's easy to practice using the same color as the base bead.

Don't kill me. I think the best thing is PRACTICE. When I first started making beads I couldn't even make one that was round, forget putting a band around it. And a band that was even, no bumps, the same width all the way around...I would've told you it would NEVER happen! Now I think I could probably do it on the first try. I'll have to view this as a challenge!
