Tool materials
Hi all. I'm gathering materials to hopefully start torching soon, and I'd like to find non-lampworking tools and put them to use. Are there any metals I should avoid for safety reasons, such as fumes?
Thanks!

(Avoid!) Galvanized metal, I think it is zinc that is the problem. That is what the blacksmith course I took taught me anyway.
There are a couple of threads here with budget tools, using things for another purpose, etc.

Stick with brass or stainless steel tools and there are a lot of threads on homemade/repurposed tools

Brass, stainless, graphite, are the most common.
Graphite can be carved and worked with basic wood tools but the dust can be bad for your lungs. A little water is often enough to control the dust.
Avoid plated metals items, aluminum, galvanized steel.
Copper will work but heats up a lot.
Steel tents to rust and can flake off into your work.
Aluminum has a low melting point and heats up a lot.
Galvanized steel has a coating of zinc that can make you suck when it vaporizes at low temps.
Metal fumes are bad for you and can cause problems.
Even low exposure levels can have a cumulative effect.

Yeah, I've seen the homemade tool threads, or at least some of them, but I wasn't sure what kind of stuff to avoid. This helps, thanks!
