Disk nippers or tile cutters are commonly used, available at most vendors here on LE

If it's smaller rod (under 12mm) just score it and snap it.

Yep. No need to wear glasses. Just score them all the way around and snap them apart.

Boro doesn't split off shards very often. If it cracks, it just cracks. It's much more friendlier than soft glass.

i use the score and snap method regulary with no problem. score , wet , snap. i wear glasses for everything , i've had multiple eye injuries, 2 while wearing safety glasses.

i use it up to 12 mm tubing and 20 mm rod.

You should always wear the glasses when breaking glass. You might want to consider doing it near the vent too. Snap a piece in a beam of sunlight, you'd be surprised how much crap's flying up out of that break.

You don't have to score around the entire circumference of the boro rod; I generally just make a mark in the glass on each side with the glass nippers -- the ones with a cutting wheel on either side -- then hold one mark at the top and snap the rod. You're really just breaking the surface tension by scoring it; once the surface tension is broken it's easy to snap the rod in two.

As with all glass, break quickly after you make the mark with the glass nippers, otherwise the surface will "mend" itself sufficiently so you have to do it again... but then you run the risk of a less-than-clean break.

When I break rods, I do it in front of the ventillation intake so it carries glass dust away.

If you are breaking large tubing, score a 1/3 way around, wet it, then place a hot gather at the end of an 8mm rod onto the score and keep it pressed tight. The tubing will break along the score line.

I agree, all I have ever done is score, lick my finger and wipe it on the score " I think this cuts down on the dust", and snap.

we cut pound after pound of tubing and rod in boro daily.

for rods, a simple drag of the scoring knife across one side of the rod is sufficient when under 12mm. larger sizes need a full score. we score and break as big as 50 x 5 mm tubing for people all the time. it's not as hard as you'd think.

good luck! i would suggest when breaking rods, since it wasn't mentioned before, to keep your fingers atleast a few inches away from the score. don't break it with your fingers on the score!!! good way to get a toenail in your hand. other than that, it's easy!

When I score and break rod over 12 mm, after scoring and wetting I quickly slide a sleeve cut off of an old shirt over the rod and snap the rod over my thigh. It keeps things neater.

Well that means you are stuck with all full size rods and nothing cut down to size. I'll be sending you a scoring tool

I remember being taught with the bigger size tube to score and punty up a hot rod near the score....is it just my sleep deprived mind making things up or do you do something like that with the bigger stuff?
