Default Steel shot, Is quality the issue

Are there grades of steel shot? Or is grungy, grossness what have to deal with?

I bought some steel shot at a local jewelry supply. IT is dirty, sluggy and gross.

Is it the quality of the shot? Or is this as it always is?

I am using liquid Ivory for the same reason I use liquid soap through out the house. The liquid soap doesn't leave as much residue as the cake soap.

I wish the ceramic medium worked as well. I would go back to it.

Thanks for your input.

My stainless steel shot has never gotten grungy and I've used it for years. The water will get discolored but the shot stays shiny. Are you sure they didn't sell you the shot for shot gun shells, that will rust. Hope you figure it out.

Sounds like you have steel shot and not stainless steel shot. One of the three tumblers I run has had the same shot in it for 12 years, and it still looks fine.

Mine is perfectly fine too. I store it in a plastic jar filled with water and Dawn and then just dump the whole thing in to tumble. I strain it afterward, and put it, fresh water, and more Dawn back in the jar.

Are you sure you got stainless steel? I can't imagine why you'd have a problem otherwise.

It was labeled stainless steel, but it is not shiney. We are lacking good jewelry supply in Orange County. The day I bought this I needed it NOW. I tracked down a place a couple of towns over. Very little english was spoken in the shop.

Does anyone know of a good online source? I wanted to buy local since it is so heavy, but if I have to go to LA, I will have to pay fuel and parking. I'd rather pay postage and have my time to create.

Any suggestions?

Has anyone tried this? It says Stainless Steel. I don't really trust what it says.

My stainless shot is not super bright silver either - it's more of a gray color, but it works fine.

You can try a run with the steel shot cleaner (rio has it) - that should get you back to the non gungy steel. I originally bought my stainless shit from Rio too.

I have cleaned it many times. It doesn't rust but it does develop rust type particles when it sits. When I use it the water goes black and my hands stain looking for the silver I have burnished. The silver seems discolored slightly, but polishing takes care of that.

This is Connie Fox's site. She is a well known jewelry artist. I bought my tumbler and shot from her years ago. Never had a problem.

All the links listed so far are reliable sources. Rio Grande also carries it in 2lb. bags.

This is where I purchased mine too. I like their mix because it doesn't have the pins that get stuck in chains.

But the pins are excellent for getting into small areas, intricate designs etc...

I agree, even though I have lost a couple of the pins down the drain though the holes in my colander. Mine came from Connie Fox and I have never had any trouble with the quality of the stainless steel.

I too lost pins until I started to put a piece of kitchen paper in the bottom of my colander before I poured in my shot..

My stainless shot was all grungy when I used the Ivory - then I changed to the Dawn, and it cleaned right up. I sound like a TV commercial!

I know you stated that you didn't want to go Downtown, but have you looked into the MetroRail? When I lived in Upland I used to take the train Downtown all the time. It lets you off right in Union Square and then it's a short walk to 7th & Hill Street. The last time I took the train the fare was well worth what it would cost in gas, parking and frustration.

I purchased my stainless steel shot from Connie Fox but I'm sure you can get it at A&A or maybe Progressive. Also, at A&A is where I get Mr. Tumble which I cannot recommend highly enough. I've tried Ivory and Dawn but Mr. Tumble out performs them both. My pieces come out shinier (is that a word?) and it has a tarnish inhibitor in it so my pieces stay shiny polished longer.

I could go on and on but if you need any more info please feel free to PM me.

Thanks everyone. I will try the Dawn to see if there is a quick fix to be had.

kymmerz, Actually I will go downtown when I have more to buy. I purchased most of what I have for jewelry from A&A. I buy my silver around the corner from A&A. I can't think of the name right now. I just don't need enough stuff, right now, to make a trip worth my while. I'd rather spend the time in my studio.

I will be looking into mister tumble. Anything that makes silver shinier and keep tarnish away, is something I want to try.

Thanks all!
