Question Goldstone Chunk Question

Hey all you Bead-a-licious Peeps out there!

I have a big chunk of goldstone; what is the best way to break it up into smaller chunks so I can encase it? It is almost the size of a golfball but with sharp angles. Thx!

My guess would be to heat it up in the kiln and then carefully put it into a pan of cold water.

I put mine in a heavy duty freezer bag and whack it with a hammer on a concrete floor.

Yep, I use the sack-and-whack technique too!

Also works well if you have 87 lbs of it to break up!

Well, except I wrapped it in pleather remnants.

This stuff is fairly brittle so no pre-heating is required to break into manageable chunks. I use the wrap-it-and-whack-it technique also

Here is what I do:
  1. Put your kitchen oven on high (as high as it goes without turning the grill on).
  2. Put in the chunk of goldstone.
  3. Leave it there for a couple of hours.
  4. Take a large metallic pot, fill it with cold water.
  5. Drop the thouroughly heated chunk in the pot of water.
  6. Let it cool.
  7. Chop it up with a hammer! By now it should be very easy as the thermal shock has given you lots of tiny cracks.

Method courtesy of Larry Scott!
