I really liked the Dragon scale beads by Naos, I learned how to make a SIS and work on dots, I remember being confused about what SIS even was!

Hmm my tip, When I was a newbie there always seemed to be a new tool or tutorial that I felt I needed to have. I think before buying any shaping tools it is a good idea to learn to make a nicely shaped donut bead that is centered on the mandrel with dimpled ends.

I can't pick just one. There are entirely too many to choose from.

My cheap easy "tip" is for arm rests. I bought 2 empty quart paint cans, covered them in fuzzy socks and they became my arm rests.

Tip: Use the small, narrow 2 oz travel bottles from the pharmacy to pour your bead release into ... you can get a nice deep dip right down to near the end of your "big" bottle.

I was going for SaraKay's thread when I saw Misty posted it.....it's one of those beads that is timeless in terms of shape and colors....and as Misty said, bittersweet.
Tip? Marver gently. I can't tell how many beads I had to reshape, due to vigorous marvering....I finally learned to be butterfly kiss gentle...and marver more often if necessary.

This was a really good thread about glass compatibility with regards to coe and viscosity. Even now that we've been using the furnace glass frits for several years with other coe's, I don't think everyone fully understands why they work. This explains some of it.

I think I remember a previous thread getting rather heated, and it was deleted, but this one, while not everyone agreed, stayed fairly civil.
And one of the best tips I could give someone just coming into this is to relax and slow down. Pick something and learn it well (or at least give it a fair shot), then move on to the next thing. I see so many people in such a hurry to learn everything all at once, and then they get frustrated that they can't seem to do things the way they want to. It takes time and practice, (and a lot of it)! Don't be discouraged by the things you can't do on the first (or tenth) try. Learning to do something well is going to take time.

I'm with Eileen, the newbie mistakes thread was the most helpful to me. When I was first learning, I felt stupid as heck and wondered why I did all these stupid things when clearly other people were not nearly so stupid (and yes, I'm aware I used "stupid" three times... now four!). I felt like I was at least not necessarily on the wrong track, anyway. So many talented artists were guilty of the same silly mistakes, and that made me feel much better about my glass journey.

The homemade tools thread is great http://www.lampworketc.com/forums/sh...=%2Apurpose%2A.
It has given me inspiration and a heightened awareness in hardware stores, cooking utensil stores, even Salvation Army type places for things to be repurposed in my lampworking world.
Conversely, my "tip" is that sometimes you should just buy that specialized tool you're lusting after instead of spending even more money trying to come up with your own version.

I don't think I could nominate a favourite 'thread', except maybe the Hothead one in the Gallery, when I was using the HH.
But second to bead porn in the Gallery (which I perved on for a year or so before I actually started lampworking), the Tips and Tutorial sections were my go-to, and I lived in the Newbie galleries for a very long time, and still pop in now and then to say hi and see how everyone's doing.
As life allows, I might still have a holiday in there from time to time, but now I might post in the daily gallery threads if I've learned something well enough to show off and share, or if a new idea I've worked on comes off well enough to share.
Either way, whether I've been absent or not, LE has been a mainstay one way or another.

There are many, many, other threads that I love. Since I still haven't taken a single class and I've been doing this for 5 years, I'd say I owe almost everything I know to LE and the wonderful people I have met here.
My tip... do your research and ask questions - you might get some nasty responses but it makes you learn, and that's all that matters, right? Also you make great friends... who even give you gifts.

Most useful thread
Awww... this is such a toughie to answer - I've not been lampworking long and almost every thread has helped me immensely, particularly the Q's and A's. Everyone is so helpful and answers daft questions quickly and without any superiority (unlike some other sites).

Also, but not exactly a thread, the Garage Sale section enabled me to drop on a real bargain when I upgraded from my Hothead last year - a complete set-up with kiln, torch, oxy-con, masses of glass and tools for pretty much the cost of a new torch. It was fairly local to me in the UK too, so this site is invaluable no matter where you live.
