Hi Everyone!

I don't know if you all saw it in last night's S&T; Nancy posted a bead that took this technique a "step up" and made a "rose" murrini using this tutorial as a foundation (at least that was my inference from her post). I've written her a PM and asked if she would consider adding her tips and techniques on how to accomplish this, or maybe do an additional tutorial on how it's done. If she decides to keep this a "private" technique, though, I surely understand and I thank her for simply inspiring us to put our own individual spins on this great foundation she's given us!

If you'd like to see what I'm talking about, check Post #5 in this thread - it really is great:

Hi De,

LOL! Thanks for the compliment. I PMed you back!

You are correct the rose murrini is made with this murrini technique. As for the advanced tutorial, I'll have to find time to do them first since its not a 10 min job! In the mean time, I would LOVE to see what everyone made.

Here's the bead in question:

Cheers
Nancy

Hi Vanessa,

seeing as I did most of the demo last month, I think it's someone else's turn.

This is why I was running between your photo tutorial and Nancy's spiral demo.

I'm thinking that if we can encourage Nancy to do a "paid" tutorial on the Rose Murrini (and maybe other variations on this cool spiral?), she'll reveal even more exciting possibilities. Everyone, line up behind ME!!!

Thanks for sharing Nancy! Maybe if time and encouragement allow...

LOL, you really really want the rose tut don't you? Alas, I don't think I'll have time to do a photo tut in the next few months.

Tell you what, post picture of two attempts with the spiral murrini and I'll PM you a written instruction.

Cheers

One of the best ways to make rose murrini I know of is in the Tonbo Dama book ( http://www.artcoinc.com/tonbo-dama_book.php ). It is the second picture from the top right, the pink and white gather. It is probbably hard to see, but a bead using the rose murrini is located at the very top rightish (white with pink and green).

That rose murrini is built by pulling "petal" cane and then combining them into the final rose murrini.

I can also think of a few other ways to make rose cane. You could try to make a spiral with a transparent and opaque color, but leave gaps in the opaque to make a "dashed" or broken spiral which might look like petals.
You could also start with a thin rod of transparent and paint on two or so petals, encase thinly, paint on more petals, encase, petals, (encase), and then pull.
I think the key in either case is to try to make the layers of transparent thin enough that your rose doesn't look empty.

Ryan is the BOMB!!!

He makes such amazing murrini!!! I do have the Tonbo Dama book - and have seen that Rose Cane as it's made there...until recently, I've been working strictly on a Hot Head and didn't have a good enough hot plate to be able to keep murrini or, in the case of the rose, strips of flat ribbon cane hot enough to add to a built cane.

I should definitely revisit this - and thanks for your offer, Nancy! I'll see if I can get it going on with the spiral....too many ideas, too little time!!!

Hugs to you both!

Hi Naomi,
Glad you liked it!

The good thing about this method is that it is very forgiving with thermo shock. The only time you need the heat is when melting the initial gather for the lolly-pop and doing the final melting before pull out. For the rest of the time, as long as you keep the ribbon shape (thin strip), you will not have any problem. As a matter of fact, I put down the whole ribbon after it was made and went to fiddle with the back ground to take some clearer photo for the tutorial (you can tell by the back ground for the ribbon pictures). After those photos are taken, I can touch the ribbon without been burned!

The only thing I will change for HH users is to use metal punties for the final pull. With the wide heat area glass puntie will melt and flop around before you are ready to pull.

Please everyone, give this a try and let me know any issues or problem that you have encountered. I will update the tutorial with additional tips if necessary.

Cheers
Nancy

Thanks for the tutorial. I keep seeing murrini or thinking of patterns I would like to make and wonder "how would I do that?". I would never have thought of rolling up glass!!!

Thanks Ryan, for the extra tips on how to make one into a rose.

Nancy, I was just wondering how to make spirals, then I happened upon this tut!! Thank you so much! A very easy read. Thought I'd give it a go. This is what I got:

I just want to share my experience with helping to keep the spiral crisp. Lay down the murrini chip on to your base; do not melt it into the base as is. Put a drop of clear right on top of the chip, THEN melt it into the base. It's fun!
Thanks so much for this tut!
