Price for Dildo
I have an order for a double ended dildo and have no idea what to charge for it. It is a total of 12 to 14 inches long with a diameter of at least 1 and a half inches.
Any ideas what to charge for this? I was thinking $80?
PM or let me know here if you are brave.

80 should be a good deal... if you hunt for this stuff online, someone would pay closer to double that...

Thanks everyone for your replies!
It is just a piece of glass but Admins can move it to the bedroom if people get offended; certainly don't want to do that.
The subject matter is in the title of the post, why look at it if it offends you?

I was told once to decide what price I wanted to charge, and then double it.
The worst that can happen is at the end of the day you still have your art.
Unfortunatly I tend to sell my cheaper than I should, cause I want the money

Because the subject matter IS in the title and it was on the front page when I opened LE. So the under 18 crowd or those of us a little more senstive can't help but read it. Even left in this room I would have perfered to not see the word "dildo" on the opening page and you could have added a warning. I've seen many LE'ers use this method. I know I'm being more senstive than others and I'm by no means judgeing anyone for buying, using, making, selling or admiring this art form. I just don't like seeing it blantatly when I first log in and there are children here. I just think it would have been better to hint at it and then post a warning. I also think the boro room is probably the room it should be in. When I posted my other post I thought I was in the general "tips and tech" room.

I think this is the perfect room for this, but I posted my Penises here so I'm not going to throw any stones.
Now, onto the subject at hand:
The questions you need to ask yourself is "How long did I work on this?" and "How much glass did I use?"
Have you figured out your hourly lampworking rate yet?
If you feel that the $80/Hours worked - Cost Of Glass = Enough Profit then it should be fine. For me, I'd say $80 is a little low for a handmade piece like this.
Hope this helps,
Lloyd

I thought about that and chuckled . . . maybe a dildo is more offensive than a penis. Hmmmmm . . . I think they are both pretty cool, but now I think I am just instigating, so I will stop while I am ahead.
Thanks for the ideas about pricing, It's difficult to figure since this is a custom order.
And thanks for the encouragement and compliments everyone.

if its a custom order, and your making it a specific way, add 30%...
i tend to shoot below a retail, but push the limits of what i think the individual will pay...
if the customer thinks its too low, let em know that you'll always take more

Where's Heidi the dildo queen when we need her?
She was charging a fair amount for hers, and they were going like
hotcakes. Since yours is REALLY a custom one (meaning - I've never
seen one quite like that, AND it's a special order made to spec) the sky
is pretty much the limit.
However, I WILL say that you should have given them (and they should
have insisted upon) pricing up front. Coming back to them with a high
price might kill the sale.
From what I can see, it's basically about 5-10$ worth of boro rod, and
it should have taken you about 30-45 minutes to make (am I in the
ballpark?) so the $80 price should cover your costs AND give you
a nice profit. If you had added any extras, like color, or (like Heidi
was doing) some millifiori work in the base, then you could add on
some more bucks.

Damn....12"x2" worth of glass - basically a maria and a rounded end.
What's that...maybe 40 minutes of work with a decent torch.
And they're asking $699 for it? My friends, I am in the WRONG end
of this glass industry (literally, the WRONG END).

there are people out there who may be allergic to some of the oxides in colour, having said that, some of the colours are pretty stable and don't leach oxides, like cobalt. It helps to deeply encase the colours in clear, too. Never ever use fumy colours in a sex toy, it leaves you wide open to litigation.
on a different swing, can I just say "what the..." ???

I'd say a piece like that, should be charged at minimum of $120 per hour, not least because of liability issues & the extensive annealing required for such a sensitive item (Have you read northstar's recommendations, for example?). The fact that it's custom is certainly an additional cost factor.

You might want to check with Heidi about the annealing schedule.
She was also pretty vocal about checking it with a polariscope (I think
that was what she called it - I forget) to check for glass strain and
cracks (since it's such a large amount of glass). I don't think she's
making glass items anymore.
