Default Kiln Problems

My kiln is acting up today.

JenKen kiln
When I first turned it on I got the program started and I thought it started heating up. While dipping some mandrels I turned and looked and saw it wasn't heating up and said 'err', I think it was. So I turned it off and restarted the program. It seemed like it took a while for it to actually click on and start heating. It heated to temp and I made beads for about 2 1/2 hrs. I had a little more than an hour left on the timer at 950 and I noticed it all of a sudden started losing temp and was dropping and it wasn't clicking on and off. It dropped to about 907 degrees and started back up and heated back up to 950. I stopped beading and stuck my extra fire brick in the door hole so if it stopped again it wouldn't lose heat quite as quick. About 10 minutes later it stopped again and started dropping. I rapped on the box and the light came back on and started heating up again... This has now happened on and off a few more times in the past half hour. I'm not sure if there is a loose connection in there or if it's something else. If I rap on the box it kicks back on, but eventually goes off again.

If/When it makes it through the complete ramp down cycle tonight, my husband will check it out. We did replace something on it back in July 2010. I think it was some sort of switch. I ordered it from Bartlett. I had only torched a few more times after that in 2010 and didn't start back to beads till this past Sept. So it is just now getting used again.

If it is not just a loose connection of something in there, what else could it be and should we check on it?

Doesn't sound like a relay (which is probably what you replaced in 2010). Have you tried contacting JenKen?

I'm in MI too, if it does happen to be a relay, I have a few here.

Ya, I think it was the relay we replaced. That's what my husband thought when I mentioned it to him.

I didn't contact JenKen yet. At that point I figured it was late in the day to call. .... I just finished looking at the Bartlett site and think it may be the thermocouple. We will test it tomorrow and I will call either JenKen or Bartlett.

I guess I will just have to play with making twisties and stringers for the next week. LOL
