Can I piggyback on your thread since it is also about shorts?
I can't stand the idea of wasting glass, so I use them as long as I can stand the heat long enough to melt the end of the rod or stringer, etc.
So I'm talking maybe 2" or less. Is that about what everyone does? Then depending on what I'm doing with them, I may hold it with some pliers or other tool to get a little more out of them (the stringer anyway). I have been eying some of the tools for holding shorts. Right now I have a clip on the end of a dowel rod but you can smell the wood beginning to burn sometimes.
I tried to attach the bitty piece to a new rod, but it doesn't seem very strong.

weld it to the next rod of the same color or weld it to a clear short.

I do weld them to another rod, but ultimately I end up with shorts that I box up & gift to someone. I don't weld clear for encasing, so the majority of my short box is clear.

All my shorts go into a box and eventually I make twisties out of them. I do the same with my uglies (pendants i don't like or break). My uglies have made some really cool twisties, of course I can never reproduce them.

All my shorties go into a giant tupperware container. When I get a ton or get the urge I let my daughter sort them into "themes" and we makle frit and gift it to people or use it up As a bonus she gets to name it.
Here's some of her handiwork

Oh, I hate wasting glass too. I wrote a little article on using shorts in the first issue of my magazine, the Soda Lime Times. The July, 2011 issue is free if you follow the link in my signature below and has some great tips on using shorts.

I use my shorts up. I have one of those holder thingys and when I get a bunch of them, I made BOC beads.

Like Eileen, my shorts are quite short. I am using them for bead cores, clear especially, but also nice for frit beads or encased. Stringers also. I still have a coffee can full but I feel good when I use them. Makes up a little for the increasing glass orders.

I did end up with a rod holder, and now most of the time I use them till they're gone. When they get to the last inch or so I just open the holder & let them wind on using just the flame, maybe a marver when needed.

I've been fusing the little 2" pieces together, different colors, and making colorful BoC beads with them. Otherwise, the little teeny tiny bits go with my broken beads into my "glass garden", a little area outside my studio that will eventually be a lovely (albeit dangerous) area of glass. Just pretty to look at.
