Default very, very easy gold fumed pendant (boro)

Here is a link to some pictures that show the process - - very simple, but quite effective. Have a look . . .

Nice explanation. I can see myself actually trying this and I only work with 104 at the moment! Thanks.

I got the gold from the bank - it was a 2.5g gold-bar - the smallest they had. And it has to be pure gold - best is 24 karat or 999.9.
But don't worry, it will last a very long time - actually works out cheaper than using color rod. Do the fuming in a oxygen rich flame. Have fun . . .

I don't think I've ever gone into my bank and asked to buy a gold bar.

Imagine explaining that you want to melt it.

Most glass dealers carry thin gold wire for this. They also have silver.

Here are a few pendants that I made with gold and silver. A problem I have with the gold is that it can drip off the punty very easily. I have four drops of gold in front of my torch

wonderful pendants - love your work
as for the dripping - - just use less gold. I have the same problem, when there is too much gold on it. A tiny little bit will do the job and not drip off

the banks have those cute little bars that will last a very, very long time - and it is the purest gold you can get. Attached is my little gold bar and it has fumed hundreds of pendants.

Thank you so much for posting this. Gold fuming fun tomorrow! I do a lot of silver fuming but not much gold fuming. This has inspired me.

for more colors try fuming gold and then add a little silver fume - this will change the gold to greenish hues.
An other good one . . . when you fumed the disk with gold, fume the other side with silver, encase and continue like normal. Sometimes twisting less will look better . . . . I think.

Thank you all for the kind comments

How do you get the gold bit onto the punty ? do you just nip off a piece and put it onto a hot punty ?

Awesome tut!

For those who want to fume gold on to 104, I think you still may need a punty rod of boro. That's what I have done when fuming.

If you have booklets of gold leaf, you can wad a leaf up in to a ball and use that too.

To Greg:
yes, snip off a tiny little bit of gold and put it on your graphite pad. Now heat up a 6-8mm punty, until it is very hot - amost liqud and quickly push it onto your gold. If it was hot enough it will stick. If you used too much gold it will drip off your punty while fuming.

to Donna: adjust your flame to quite oxidising, hold the punty with the gold very close to the flame at the face of the burner and you will see the color of your flame changing to orange. This will transport the gold particles with the flame like a sprycan. Hold your work piece at the end of the flame and you will see a pinkish color appearing. The more you do it, the color will change to redish hues.
This is where you need to experiment to get what you want.

Hope this helps - post some pics and we can give you feedback

Wow! You work is incredible and so is your generosity! I am trying to learn on my own without an instructor so things like this are literally a gold mine (pun intended!) for me! I too work in 104 and I have a couple of questions. Is the base that you actually fume clear glass? What do you mean by 'the lense' and how is it formed?
Thank you SO VERY MUCH! I know what I will be doing today!

Dear Wendy
The "base" is a rod of clear glass - I think I used a 12 or 14mm diameter - but it is BORO not 104. When I talk about the lense I mean the domed front of the pendant. It has a magnifying effect like a lense. When I take the big rod off, I melt in the glass until the shape is even (forming the "dome" or "lense"). You let gravity to the job.
I never had an instructor - I just never gave up trying. Good luck and have fun. If I can help you with anything just ask and I will do my best.

These pendants are made in a pretty similar fashion...

Really easy enough and I really like the fact that I can "pin up" the tut and follow the pics for the steps. It always seems to me that I read a tut and think I know what I'm supposed to be doing but when actually sitting at the torch I forget a step. The pics with a short description of the step is perfect IMHO

I gave the spiralling thing a go the other day (on-mandrel), and it failed dismally. That was my fault, though. I'll keep trying, because there are definitely possibilities with your shaping technique for soft glass, on - mandrel. It will be my task to keep at it for a while.
Thank you
