Talk to me about white hearts
I plan to do some etched white hearts...so the white can "glow" through. I've seen pictures of white hearts but I have a novice question.
Is the white base small with lots of transparent encasing or the other way around?
It occurs to me that if the transparent is medium to dark in color that a thick layer would prevent you from seeing the white glow from within. So in this case I'm thinking large white base...thin encasing layer?
How about light transparent colors? Thick or thin encasing to acieve the effect?

I thiiiiink most of the white hearts I've seen have a fairly thin encasing... It's not really a term that comes to mind when I look at thickly encased beads though, so it might just be me!
I can say that if you're using ink blue or colours of similar darkness and saturation, then yes, you definitely want it thin

Hi swamper!
I'd do a thin encasement for the darker colors and a thicker encasement for the lighter colors. As a side note, for really light colors, try encasing lightly over dichro and then giving it a really light matte finish. You'll love it.
Here's more than you really needed to know about white hearts...
White Hearts are generally transparent reds, oranges or blues over
opaque white glass. The light passes through the transparent bead
and bounces off the white, thereby brightening up the color. They
blend nicely with their neighbors. These beads have a wonderful
history to them. They were originally made in the 17th and 18th
centuries. Originally, red glass was pigmented with real gold, so this
was a way of making the beads for a lesser expense. Now, most
white hearts are African Imports.

Thanks, Hannah. Awesome info. Love the idea of using the dichro...it could give me the chance to use dichro and conceal the fact that I'm not too good at using it. <G>

1. Confusion.
2. Googled "white heart bead".
3. OH! You mean a pony bead with transparent color layered over a white core!
4. No more confusion.

Another thing I've done with the darker colors is to keep the white base small, encase it thickly with clear, then a thinner layer of the dark transparent. You still get the richness of the darker color, but the light transference of the clear layer helps it from going too dark.

I always thought of white hearts as tiny donuts encased in colour.

Yup, I was thinking the same...and I'm tired enough tonight to look at the spacer beads and think, huh, they're not hearts. Time to go to bed, LOL.

I'm glad somebody asked what they are, I wasn't sure either. Now I know a technique I often wondered but never asked how to get the effect! Thanks for that!

So if those are called white hearts, what are the beads called that have a colored center, a thick layer of clear encasing and are then etched?

I make my white hearts by encasing a small white bead with a transparent glass color in the center of the bead leaving the white to show a bit on each side of the bead. Like you would to encase but not go entirely to the mandrel, and I like to etch them as it brings out a glow to the bead.
You don't have to just use white as a base, light ivory, silver pink, rubino, and opal yellow to name a few, make simple beads that look more complex than they are. These are especially nice for earrings and sell well.

Thanks to everyone. I felt a little foolish asking but now I'm glad I did. Great new techniques to try and now it's an archive for future fools like me.

The traditional white hearts are just as described, but there are no rules. I did a series of Bullseye beads for my color class using both thin and thick casing. I also took a stringer of another transparent color, placed it down the center of the last (outside) layer and then melted it in for a tinted effect.

Oooh I'd love to see how that goes
