Show and Tell >>> Pipes
My first pipes.
Not sure if its ok to post these here if not hopefully someone will let me know 
A spoon and a sherlock...made these last night. Turned out pretty good. The Sherlock wound up with a slight kink about 2/3 of the way down the stem but still functional...pretty happy with my first ones 
 side view  sherlock 
side view ...managed to make it so it stands on its own

Made this for a friend at work everyone seems to be wanting tiny things but its cool. First disk attempt at the mouth piece could of done better if i had a masher lol.

Thats one awesome piece there wicked! I can't even fathom how it's done.
I cheated on my nice even lines as I have not tried a tube pull or vac stick stack yet. I read on melting pot how to do stick stack but need to see it done to wrap my head around the tech. I've never watched someone other than you tube vids make stuff. My nice straight lines is because I used tailor made tube from Glass Alchemy.

a fitting side note to this thread....
if you've not seen Degenerate Art: The Art and Culture of Glass Pipes, you must. Great documentary about the history of the movement, and some great exposure for so many of the great artists in the film.
we have the DVD now that it's been released. it's one of the most important glass films you could see.

Show and Tell
First two attempts at a sherlock. Third and fourth attempts at implosion marbles, first two in attaching them to a piece. First attempt at a reversal. The thing is tiny tough maybe an inch. Gonna try a three or four piece sectional next.

Troyd good work on the sherly i like the look of them and the fact they stand up right.
Istandalone good job on the wrap and rakes try heating up the end of the color rod as much as you can and go a bit slower on the wrap. It will tighten up the wrap.
Everything looks great.

nice. i have yet to try one of those....or any two piece for that matter. just got my kiln in the studio today and have to pick up an extension cord..$90 for a 12g 50' cord!

Ya but you dont want anything less cause it will blow breakers. Their pretty fun to make make actually a real challenge the downstem and weld are the hardest parts but their worth the effort.

Thanks James! You got some good look'in stuff yourself.
istandalone good job yo! Looks real good. Do pull from the rod or use stringer?
Some stuff I made this week. The frit piece was inspired by a meadow. I call the wacky one a free floating pack. Which isn't how I want it but its close. I dont want it to be a sherlock of sorts the tubes are supposed to attach on the sides of the pack and it is straight and flat. Thought the Happy as Fu#$ piece would be appricated on here and thats my first bub. Super stoked on that one.

Good lookin bub troyd. Make sure your colors melt in well. Or they will pop off and no body wants that lol try a small oxy flame to melt them. Does the bub stand on its own? Ive made a couple standing.
Istandalone try putting a tube implosion at the bowl end of your pipe or even a rod. As good as you are at them ill bet youll make them sing man. Lets keep the pics comin

funny you mention that....i'm getting my 10g extension cord ($90 for f@cks sake) this weekend and the first thing i want to do is make a bunch of small implosion and vortex marbles to adorn some spoons!
that, and now i can make some 2pc stuff. i've been missing out not having a kiln next to me.

You can always flame anneal what your working on as long as its not to thick and just put to the side and when your ready to use it just reverse the process to heat it up pretty simple actually. Just have to be patient with it lol have fun with the kiln lol

Do yourself a favor and forget the words "flame annealing" until you have a couple thousand hours behind the torch under your belt. Just pretend they don't exist, or like, they're in a foreign language which SOUNDS like English but has an entirely different meaning.

i agree with bunyip, and it agrees with everything i've ever been told by experienced lampworkers.....that flame annealing isn't the best thing for a newbie to try. in that a newbie won't even do it right.
i still fail to see how flame annealing is even possible. i don't see it cooling down slow enough at all.

As my first boro instructor said, he was a professional scientific flame worker, flame annealing isn't about removing all stress, but removing enough that the piece is functional. He was talking about repairing things that could not be uninstalled and put into a kiln because they were either too big or were assembled in place.

ahh, so it isn't even really annealing....more or less just cooling it evenly (or more evenly then bench or blanket) in lieu of a kiln.
that makes sense.
