annealing bubbles vs vermiculite
Are annealing bubbles better than vermiculite?
Why do you feel this way?
plan to batch anneal when I have pieces good enough
desire to make marbles up to 1 inch. will be using both 104 and 33.

TONS better!
1. They hold heat better, therefore, cooling slower which means less chance of cracking.
2. You don't have to shove your items in. The beads move easily out of the way, so there's less chance of getting those yucky spots you sometimes get with vermiculite.

Not to mention the health hazards for your lungs with the vermiculite.

Forget the crockpot, just use a can and as far as the vermiculite any sold now is labeled ASBESTOS FREE!

All of the Crock Pots I've tested never got over about 180° F. That's *SO* far below the annealing point and/or the stress point that it would have no effect on the glass!
That said, I will never deny someone their own experience. So, I won't argue when someone says that their beads crack if they don't heat up the Crock Pot, and don't crack when they do heat it up.
(most likely, they unknowingly introduced other factors into the test, which accounts for the results)
And, IMNSHO, the annealing bubbles are *much* better that vermiculite. That, plus the fact that I sell them 
Keep in mind that a 1" marble in soft glass will be more likely to crack due to thermal shock and/or improper annealing than a 1" marble in boro. It will be very important to stabilize the temperature within the marble before putting it into your slow-cooling media.

I LOVE my annealing bubbles! I do use a crock pot with them when it is really cold in my studio, but I imagine that if I made spacers, or small beads first to take the chill off, I would get the same results.
