Nope .... just make sure that the hose you are using it appropriately rated.

Propane (in BBQ tank or #1 cylinder) has a tank pressure of approximately 127 psi at 70° f....

A hothead requires a minimum pressure of 60 to 70 psi to begin to function properly.... Its the actual design of the torch that makes the high pressures necessary....

Some people have used regulators, and found it solved a specific problem for them, but again the regulator has to be capable of at least 60 psi for torch to even function....

This is reason for having a hose that is 1> LP gas approved, 2> has a pressure rating of 250-300 psi, 3> needs to be of good quality manufacture (no home made junk or hoses from questionable sources)...

Dale makes a really important point about no junky hoses if you're going to work on a hot head. An LE member got the scare of her life when she had a fitting fail on her HH set up. Fortunately, she's still with us.

I hope your tank is outside, and well away from you as you work....

So are you guys saying that a regulator is not needed on a 5 gallon BBQ tank for torch work, or only not for a Hot Head? My propane guy insists that I do not need a regulator for my Lynx, but I've never been sure he knew what he was talking about....

Jo - Applies to HH's only. Oxy/propane torches like your Lynx work on far lower propane pressures than a hot head (5-8 psi vs 60-70+ psi), and therefore need to have a regulator to work right: I agree, I don't think your propane guy understands glassworking torches. As Dale notes, the HH was specifically designed to work at much higher pressures. If I'm not mistaken, they were originally intended to be used on the 1lb disposable MAPP canisters directly, with no regulators.
