Weird glass reaction - blue to grey-black?
I'll post pictures as soon as I'm awake enough to go out to the studio, but wanted to start this thread while I'm thinking of it.
Made a small parrot like bead yesterday, blue with red and yellow added to the wings and tail - I was shooting for a Macaw, working without reference pictures.
I'm 99% certain (I was working with unlabeled rods) that the base bead was either 240 Light Cobalt Blue or 242 Medium Cobalt Blue, the decoration was 424 Carrot red and 412 Dark yellow.
Bead looked fine when I popped it into the kiln; it came out almost black with red and yellow trim. Nothing else in the kiln came out with any unexpected color shifts.
Thoughts?

Could it have been a silver glass? I've never had cobalt turn blackish.

Here's the bird, side by side with the rod. The bin I pulled it from is labeled 240.
Never seen anything quite like it.

Did you mix the blue with the yellow at all? Or is it just laid on top?
The metals in the blue will react with the metals in the yellow and turn black if they are mixed. It also happens with ivory and blue if they are mixed.
The black is like a giant version of the reaction line between blue and yellow.

It looks like it reduced.

I think that's it - I cleaned the bench while I was waiting for the kiln to finish up, but I went and dug around in the tin bucket I throw my shorts into, and there WAS a cobalt blue rod with a heavily reduced end. I made that test bird late in the session, one of those quick and dirty things - basically I was experimenting with finding the balance point where it would hang right- so maybe it got cooked. I did a number of other beads with the same rod that session and they all stayed blue.
The rod would never have gotten close to the yellow and red stringer, so it has to have been cooked while I was winding the initial gather on. I'm going to chalk it up to too much heat and just be more cautious with that blue next time.

And you might oxygenate your flame a touch more to be sure. That helps too. Glad you found the source. It always is nice to know "why". Looking forward to seeing your next results.
