I'm going to try these tonight. I bought some special wire someone on the forum mentioned (can take high heat) and I know some people use a pin vice to hold the wire while they're working it, but if I want to pop them into the kiln, I can't imagine messing with getting the wire out of the pin vice and then reaching into the kiln with a short piece of wire. I bought some fiber blankets and could make a bunch and pop them in the blankets and then batch anneal them later. I've never used fiber blanket though--wondering if the headpins will be safe in there until I'm ready to batch anneal.

How do people get these into the kiln? Am I an idiot?

Lillian, I just unscrew the pin vice a half turn & grab the bit sticking out with pliers & put them into the kiln. The wire is so thin that it only takes a half turn or so to loosen it enough that it will come out.
