I was wondering, does anyone do 'core vessels' in boro?

I've never heard of it but I'm sure it's possible...although it's probably faster and easier (not to mention cleaner) to just use tubing.

I've never done it but it does look fun. I think it would work better with soft glass than boro though since the soft glass tends to be a little more "sticky" at a lower temp.
I'm guessing you're thinking of the refractory over steel wool type of core? If one were to sort of blow up in your flame you'd have a nasty mess to clean up.

I would just coil pot them on the end of a blow tube. I've never tried the core method, but looks like a recipe for disaster.

In my class with Suellen Fowler at Corning last year Jesse attempted a large core formed vessel over steel wool and slurry. Even after drying the core thoroughly for a week and overnight in the kiln it bubbled like crazy while applying boro. Twas a janky mess. But fun to watch!

So, what is a "core vessel"?

a core vessel is a vessle that is made over a claylike core. think of a bead with a really big unusually shaped mandrel, but the mandrel is made to fall apart and be cleaned out of the hole after annealing. usually the wire is pulled out, and then you go to work with dental picks, tweezers, etc. to pull out all the stuff that is still in hole. some use layers of steel wool covered with release. I have also heard of them being done with a core of some sort of dung covered with the release. there are soem who believe that the egyptians may have done it that way.

Now, that just sounds nasty! Especially using the dung. It also sounds like waaaayyyy too much trouble.
