Lezlie, missed your pics last time around. I was probably typing with my one finger. Your beads are DDG--that's drop dead gorgeous.
Binty-can't wait to see your pics.
I'm going back on the torch today for the first time since I broke my arm 2 months ago. Can't wait to try this. It's on my list.
Thanks again Amber.

I finally got around to doing this, thank you Amber! I loved the results. Made a bunch of troll-style beads for myself, too.

This is one of my favorite techniques now!! you can do ssooo much with it. vary the base color, vary the silver color, try encasing with a pale complimentary to the base color. I will try to post some pics of my experiments this weekend. AND anything i make sells fast!

Transparent colors also work well over the silver. I'm glad so many have had so much success with this technique.

This is such a splendid tutorial I wanted to bump it. Making them on black and on clear gives such a different look.
Thank you again for sharing your work.

Sometimes my silver leaf turns gold after I encase it with clear, sometimes it stays silver color. Is it the combo of glass colors? I've tried different brands of clear on the same combo but got the same result of remaining silver colored. I'm trying to get the silver turn gold colored as a prodicted result. Any ideas?

Carolyn, the only thing I can think of is, after application of any silver glass you're using, follow up with a Amber or Topaz transparent on any exposed areas of silver, then encase with clear.

Carolyn,
When you say this:
"Wrap it around the base bead in a random pattern twice. Leave some silver showing! This creates the intense fire color you need over your silver."
Do you mean that you are applying two layers - one on top of the other, in a random pattern each time? SO the left side and the right side both get gone over twice?
Also, do you shape it after encasing with a repeated cooling cycle (encase and shape cool), or can you just heat well and shape without concern?
Thanks very much, I am planning to make some of these when I get the glass you used.

I think you mean me and not Carolyn? It's thin one swipe down the left side, one thin swipe down the right but not even coverage - to let the silver peek through. Since I'm on a HotHead, I just heat the snot out of it after encasement and melt it into shape.

Oh wow, I didn't realize you used a Hothead to make your beads! Wonderful. Thanks so much for the info.

I love this tutorial as well. I've been making little tweaks to get different effects.
Here's a recent set that I did that I love. Think I need to redo it for me only in a scallop shell pattern for the beach.

These are my first go. I used 96 Kugler Clear and my Cricket.
When the Lauscha Clear gets here I will try another round on my Hothead. Hopefully get results more like your glorious ones. I also want to try the Clear Core. So beautiful!

Laura - Oooooh, gorgeous!!!
Folly - You have all the base opal undertones nailed!!! Since you're on a Cricket, try reducing just a little bit before encasing and that should bring some blues into the design.

Oh thank you for that info. I really like the way your foil and color seems to lift and spiral... is there a trick to that effect?

No trick really. It's usually because the encasing was uneven so I had to heat the snot out of it and let it droop while shaping and pull the extra glass down to the thinner parts. LOL

Love this tutorial. I use other base colours, and various silver glasses to switch it up for different effects, but the vasis for some of my best selling beads is this tutorial. Thanks so much for sharing
