What is This? (Challenge)
These are images of a piece of glass taken with a scanning electron microscope. They are all from the same piece and illustrate a process that sometimes occurs. This is some old purple transparent - I don't know the manufacturer.
This is the ordinary surface.
If you look around you'll find some of these structures.
This is a close up shot of the previous structure.
You'll find this sort of feature more widely spread.
Can you figure out the process and what it might look like to the naked eye?

That was quick! Yes, this is natural devitrification in old glass rather than flame-induced. It looks about the same, though. You end up with some very tiny shards floating around - if you look at the scale bars you can see just how small they are.
