didy's
What exactly are didy lenses? Is it just a plain lens with a purple dye or is it more involved than that?

it is more than that. Didymium lenses are a special material/coating that filter out the soda flare and some UV light. I am not sure if they are coated, I think they can be now, but were not previously. I believe it has something to do with filtering out part of the red's/yellow in color spectrum on some level.
edited to add: found a link with some history.

Didymium is a special glass made with rare earth colorants (heavy metals) that absorb the orange fire ball (flare) that surround moltent glass... Actually Didymiun glass is no longger in productions and any new didymum glasses availabel are from last batch of didymium glass made (not a bad thing)...

The replacement of didymium glass is ACE 202 glass, which has same properties to block orange flair and allow you to see the actually glass and not the orange "light" flare...

I've been told but have no varification that China controls all the production of rare earth menerals. They recently cut off supplies to Japan in retaliation in the dispute over some islands of their coast.

Didys .... This has become sort of a 'generic' term ...
Originally, didymium glasses were developed (a *long* time ago) for scientific lampworkers to filter out the *just* yellow sodium flair. Newer glasses filter out much more than that.
The newer glasses (all using the same Schott glass for the lens) offer much better protection in the IR and UV spectrums, as well as filtering out the yellow Sodium flair. This glass is not coated; instead, it has the filtering properties included when the glass (for the lens) is made.
So, while 'Didys' has become a generic term, the current glasses (while not *just* didymium) offer much more protection than the 'original' didymium glasses.
