What are they called?
Hi,
I am looking to buy more inserts for glass knobs:
stainless steel, size #8-32, 1/2 inch length or thereabouts preferred, one end closed. Here are photos:
Research on Google shows possible names of Coupling Nuts, Barrel Nuts, Female Sex Nuts,
Binder Posts. What the heck are they called? My local hardware store doesn't have any, and the closest store that might is a 32 mile round trip.
Of course, I would like the lowest price available, and ordering online would be easiest.
Anyone have suggestions?
Mahalo,
Cheryl

I vote for Female Sex Nuts. That would be great name for your band.
Oh, that's not what you're asking?

That name does have a certain ring to it, doesn't it? I found another possibility: blind rivet nut threaded insert, except it doesn't need to collapse on the back side. I'm so confused.

Marge bates has them on her site.
http://www.glassthings.com/
I find them pricey. She uses a higher grade of stainless which does not expand and contract as much.
There is a thread in here about making your own with copper wire, I never tried it but it looked like a great Idea.

I'd be interested to see if anyone comes up with the supplier for these things. I spent a lot of time looking for them a couple of years ago and never came up with it. Let us know if you do.

Frantz Glass and Zoozii's use to carry them. You might check their website Those are the two vendors that I bought from in the past when I was doing cabinet knobs. They are hard to find on the Frantz site so you might want to give them a call instead.

Look in Frantz under: • Supplies, Other :: Knob Kits & Accessories :: Bead-A-Pull Kit
I think that's what you're looking for....

Yea I saw them on frantz. I thought they were coupling, have you tried lowes? You might be able to search all those names on the lowes site and then order online.
Can't wait to see what you are making with them!!!

Did you take one (or a photo of one) with you to Lowe's?
At my Lowe's, the staff is freaking amazing.
I have two Lowe's within a ten mile radius.
Each one of them has a guy that I have learned is a "go to" with things like this.
Show either one of them a photo or a "thingamabob" and they can pop open a drawer, and say--"what size do you need?"
They almost always also ask what you're doing with the hardware.
Which leads to yet another conversation about hot glass, and wood turning, and stained glass, and--well they like to talk. But, I don't mind.

I just buy open ended couplers in stainless from my local Ace hardware, make the knob on the coupler, then use the appropriate bolt from the back side of the drawer.

I bought some from Ace that weren't stainless and I wouldn't recommend that if you are going to melt the glass directly on it. It reacted badly with the glass.

I use these. I get them from a local guy for about 80¢.
They're stainless and have a lip, so they won't work themselves out if the glass. Let me know if you want some.
(Wow. Had no idea the pic was that huge! Sorry!)

Nette's picture are Rivet nuts
you can search rivet nuts or knurled threaded inserts
you just need 8 x 32 threads

There is no Lowe's on Kauai. There is only Home Depot, and that's the store
with a 32 mile round trip. Small island, limited resources.
They have to be stainless steel to melt the glass on directly.
I know about Zoozii's and Frantz; that is where I originally bought them.
However, their costs include a middleman, and I wanted more for less $$$.
There are some that might work on eBay, from China, but there are so
many negative feedbacks it makes me leery.
Similar ones, but open ended, are $.85 each at
http://www.steelmarinefasteners.com/...1-per-box.html
I was worried glass might go down into the hole and affect the threads.
They seem to have the right thing at
http://www.hansonrivet.com/rivet-nut...ed-inserts.htm,
but not sure of the pricing or if they would take small orders of only
50 at a time.
If Home Depot does not pan out, I'll take you up on your offer, Shawnette.
Heck, I'd like to right now. Could you get me 50 of them? If so, I'll send
my PayPal address to you for an invoice for payment and shipping.
Thank you all for your suggestions.

If anyone else wants some, let me know. I usually only get 40 or so, but I can pick up more, if needed. $1.75 shipping to the US.

What length do you want? Available in lengths from 1/8" to 3/4"
*update* These are open all the way through ... not closed on one end.

I'm on the Big Island, so know about lack of local suppliers--Home Depot is a 33-mile round trip.
I got a piece of #8 all-thread (rod threaded its entire length) and cut it to 10" for a mandrel, dipped it in thin bead release. then screwed three nuts on one end. The nuts became the inside of the knob--sort of a triple female sex nut.
Hope this is more helpful than my last post.

Yay, the stainless rivet nuts from Shawnette showed up today! I'll be making knobs tonight. Steiconi, I like your idea of using 3 nuts together too, and will try that as well. Thanks again for everyone's inputs.

No Ma'am. Skycraft doesn't have them, unfortunately. I wish they did. They'd only be about 5 cents each, lol!

Here's a similiar thread - see post #14
http://www.lampworketc.com/forums/sh...ighlight=knobs
I bought SS Hex Coupling Nut 18-8 that screws onto SS Threaded Rod 18-8 last summer from: Tacoma Screw Products, Inc. http://www.tacomascrew.com/results#!...g%20nut%2018-8.
This is a marine supply store that has locations in Washington & Idaho. They mail order if you know what you want. I was able to drive to the store with the existing knobs from my cabinets in my hand, they give me the right size & sold them to me by the each instead of 25 to a pkg. My couplings cost $1.35 each, more than I wanted to pay but they at least I knew they were Stainless. Each different type of cabinet in my house has a different screw size so you either match it or drill a different hole.
The Couplind Nuts above are not closed on one end. They probably have them.

I found some on eBay at a really good price, so good that I ordered 300. I sure hope these work, because the lip is at the bottom instead of at the top (the closed end). If anyone else wants to check them out: http://www.ebay.com/itm/131107809009...84.m1497.l2649.
I was at Home Depot today, and bought nuts like Steiconi uses. I had used these years ago, but only used one at a time, and every drawer pull came apart. Three at a time should be very sturdy. I also bought more threaded rods; these are already cut to 12" lengths, so I don't have to pull out the bolt cutters and metal files.
This is fun, and I love LE for all the help given so willingly.

Names vary depending on what industry your using parts from.
Internal threaded rod, Rivet nuts, screw post, lamp rod, threaded stand off, couplers, threaded insert, and T nuts are common.
Most industrial suppliers will have a few of these options.
When googling I found the T nuts at mutualscrew.com
Now there is a band name T nuts and the mutual screw.
