Excellent tutorial, Sarah! I might just have to try one with a head...I have only made two and they were both headless because I didn't know how to make it look right. Thanks so much for sharing!

Please share your pictures of your tries, failures and successes. Its always a good learning experience for everyone.
BTW I do work on a Hothead. I've been working on my hothead since May 16, 2003. Once a month with our local beadmakers, I play on a minor, but I love my little HotHead and wouldn't trade it in for the world.
BTW This is what happens when you don't pay attention and keep your goddess warm, she gets cranky and kick you hard enough to break her own leg off.
So be careful and remember to flash that goddess and keep her whole body warm, otherwise she gets mad. This happens because of the 'shaping' of the bead, parts are thinner, thicker, and not an even roundness. Just remember to keep her warm at all times, not molten, otherwise you lose all your details, but just keep warming her, remember when working on her head, to occassionaly flash her legs in the flame and the other way around.
Hugs from Holland,
Sarah

What an excellent tutorial Sarah! All the pictures are sooooooo helpful. I've tried to follow tutorials before, but it didn't work out. I was so excited yesterday that this one was!!!! This is my first goddess. Her breasts aren't as lop-sided as they look, the scanner caught a hot spot or something. She is not quite 2 inches tall.
Thanks again Sarah, I know what I'm making today.

ok...i did it!! I attempted my first goddess bead yesterday....and a few things went wrong...
first...I used an off white/cream colored glass for the body for lack of having an actual "flesh tone" color handy. the glass now looks like white with black marbling...sooty like streaks all thru it. kinda ok IF u want her to look like she is carved from marble but not the effect I was shooting for but oh well...
second...I think i just made her too big...and she cracked..thermal shock? like while i was working on her hair her butt cracked...and not where it is supposed to have a crack if u get my drift...lol! anyhow....
so...anyone have a suggestion on what color to use for "flesh"?
OR can anyone tell me why the color got so sooty looking? I use a hot head with MAPP gas for my work.
Thanks in advance for any pointers... am going to try again tonight.

I could swear I answered Sharon this morning...
Oh well I'll do it again.
Flesh tones... hmmm... you could always try and mix your own, but I use plain ole moretti colours. Normally ivory or dk ivory.
Now the soot... it could be from working too close to the torchhead or from dirty MAPP. My guess is prolly more working too close to the torch.
Crack... happens when you don't keep the bead completely warmed all the time. It takes practice and lots of remembering. But just flash the whole bead once in a while to keep it warm in the flame. If you are working on the head, flash the feet once in a while. If you are working in the middle, don't forget to flash the ends... just after every time you add something, just give it a quick flash in the flame to keep the heat even.
Hugs,
Sarah

Sarah,
Thank you for the tutorial. I didn't even really know where to start before I saw your tutorial! I made a goddess (the headless, Venus DeMilo-style), and I was very pleased with my first try. Unfortunately I worked a bit low in the flame so she is a little "sooty" and a little piece on the edge cracked, but I think I will etch her and maybe put her in a mosaic. I made another and I am waiting to see if she comes off the mandrel OK--Nope, it cracked. She is built a bit more like Barbie and a bit less than a goddess, but maybe I was projecting my own wishful thinking into my work! LOL
Thank you!!!!

Anna - Thank you for sharing your goddess with us! It just goes to show everyone that all it takes is a little inspiration a little direction and you can fly on your own wings! Ever goddess that has been shown has followed these directions, but each one has their own little special uniqueness! I love that about glass. We all start from the same spot and end up sometimes on totally different tangents and sometimes we parallel each other creating work that is fabulous in all its different flavours, colours, shapes and uniqueness!
Thank you everyone!

I found your tutorial very helpful. I like to make goddesses sans heads. I like them to look like something you might have found in an archeological dig lol I've made about 5 of them now. I call them my tattooed ladies.

Save it as a file on your computer and use the image uploader to stick it into your post. It can't be a really big file though.

Very NICE goddess Kerry!
What glass were you using? It looks like a type of glass that strikes, and unstrikes when heated too much.
Keep up the good work. And just so you don't feel bad, I did my first pics for over 1.5 years with scanning them on my scanner.
Get yourself a small flat box that you can put a white background into and it will help TONS. Then you can use a photoeditor to make the background white and that should make the rest of the colours right too.

I love where you have gone with the goddesses. I love the idea that everyone has followed the instructions and has gone on to do their own little things to make their goddesses their own!
Thank you for sharing and for giving everyone something so beautiful to look at!

Thank you so much! I love how everyone's beads look different and take on something of themselves. How boring it would be if we all made them the same.
Incidently, I have the green on on JustBeads and it's been bid up to be the most I have ever sold a bead for. So thank you for the tutorial!!
