Glass Rings?
I want to make some glass rings but not sure what size mandrel I need for size 6, 7 and 8 rings. Also how do you finish the insides? Just clean out the bead release?
Any help would great.

Hey there!
I've made some approx. size 7 rings with an 11/16" mandrel from Frantz.
I ordered some 5/8" mandrels for size 5, but haven't tried them yet.
And I'm guessing a 3/4" mandrel would be close to a 9 or 10, but again, I haven't gotten around to testing that. I made one, but I'm thinking it didn't like the frit I used because it more or less exploded as I tried to get it off the mandrel, and I haven't gotten back to trying it again.
Those should get you started. Have fun! They are a ton of fun to make.
The ones I've done I just cleaned out the bead release with a diamond bit on a dremel. I think I would like to take wet/dry sandpaper and do it that way--going to finer and finer grits until you have it near polished.
I'd like to hear how others finish theirs, though.
Also, weaverind (that's the seller ID on ebay) has some graphite tapered ring mandrels. I think if you were to try an off mandrel technique, you could get a good ring from that, too. I have it, just haven't tried it yet. I have to think of where I put it....

Hi Melissa,
Here a link discussing making a size 8
http://www.lampworketc.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=61840
Here is a tutorial I made for an all glass ring without release, so there is no cleaning issue
http://www.lampworketc.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=60525
And when I use bead release after removing the mandrel, I sandpolish it while the hole is still wet and then I just etch it.
I hope that helps
Sylvie

Hi,
I've made several rings. 9 -11 size. I just dremel them after removing from the mandrel. I like the way the inside is etched when I make a transparent base ring......you can see one in my etsy shop now.
They certainly are fun to make and I really like wearing them!
have fun!!
Sue
